Repressed Memories Truth Or Fiction?

Guilty Of Murder In The First Degree

          That was the jury’s verdict in the case of George Franklin, Sr, who was charged with murdering his daughter’s plyamate. But this case ws different from -  most other murder cases. It was based on memories that had been repressed for twenty years. Franklin’s daughter claimed that she had forgotten everything she had once known about her father’s crime until two years earlier, when she began to have flashbacks of the event. Gradually, though, the memories became clearer in her mind, until she recalled her father lifting a rock over h is head and then seeing her friend lying on the ground, covered with blood. On the basis of her memories, her father was convicted – but then later cleared of the crime following an appeal of the conviction. Read the rest of this entry »

Bringing Sight To People With Blinders

Al first sight it looks like an off – center ponytail flopping at the joack of the head of a 62 year old man named jerry. But a closer look reveals that it is actually a bundle of wires entering jerry’s skull.

The purpose of the wires is to link a computer directly into Jerry’s brain. The computer responds to a tiny pinhole camera mounted on one lens of a pair of sunglasses Jerry is wearing, along with an ultrasonic rangefinder mounted on the other lens. The camera and rangfinder send minute electrical charges through 68 electrodes implanted in a small area of the surface of Jerry’s brain, allowing Jerry to perceive specks of light. Violence in the United has reached epidemic levels, and there are few signs that it will let up. Serveys consitently reveal that violence and crime rank near the top of the list of social problems that concern Americans most (Stone et Kelner, 2000; Taylor; 2000)

Yet violence has not gone unchallenged, and the field of psycology is playing a key role in efforts to reduce this social ill. Psycologists specializing in diverse areas and employing the major perspectives of the field are making a concerted effort to answer key questions relating to violence. Read the rest of this entry »
